Funds raised by this event will directly support staffing at Buckman, where students learn via a multi-intelligence approach that integrates dance, music, and visual arts into the curriculum. Buckman's unique program receives no additional funding from Portland Public Schools. (In addition, one-third of the monies will go to the Portland Public School Foundation Equity Fund, distributed to needy schools across the district.) Whether using dance to learn how rock erodes from a mountainside or creating a mosaic to grasp math concepts, students are encouraged through a variety of ways to create authentic, immediate connections with the subject matter. Cheryl, a lifelong believer of the arts in education, is the mother of two Buckman students.
